More control over your Chat Buddy profile

Your profile. Your privacy. Your choice.

Being part of Chat Buddy does not mean everything on your profile has to be visible to everybody. Registered members can choose who sees supported profile information, helping you enjoy the social side of Chat Buddy while keeping control over what you share.

Profile privacy controls are available to registered members for supported profile information.

You choose Different parts of your profile can have different visibility settings where supported.
Friends can be different Share something with people you know on Chat Buddy without making it visible to everyone.
Change it when you want Your privacy choices are not permanent. Update supported settings as your preferences change.

A profile without giving up control

Share enough to be part of the community — without sharing everything

Profiles help make Chat Buddy feel like a community rather than a room full of anonymous names. They let people recognise you, remember who they have spoken to and learn a little about the people around them. But not every piece of profile information needs the same audience.

Have a real profile

Add the details that make your Chat Buddy profile feel like yours, including supported profile information, photos and social features.

Choose the audience

Supported profile information can use privacy choices such as Everyone, Friends or No One, depending on what you are comfortable sharing.

Use different settings

You do not have to treat every part of your profile the same way. One item can be public while another is limited to friends or hidden.

Three straightforward choices

Everyone, Friends or No One

Chat Buddy keeps profile privacy simple. For supported profile information, you can choose the audience that makes sense to you rather than having to make your whole profile either public or private.

Everyone The supported profile information can be seen by other people who are able to view your Chat Buddy profile.
Friends The information is limited to people connected with you as friends on Chat Buddy.
No One The supported profile information is hidden from other members.

Different information, different choices

Your whole profile does not need one privacy setting

You may be happy for everybody to see some information but prefer to keep other parts for friends. That is exactly why Chat Buddy uses individual privacy choices for supported profile information.

Profile details
Decide whether supported personal profile information is visible to everyone, only your friends or nobody else.
Gallery activity
Supported gallery and social information can use privacy choices so you have more say over who can view it.
Social information
Some information connected with your activity or profile can be shared differently depending on how widely you want it seen.
Friends-only details
The Friends option gives you a middle ground between showing something to everyone and hiding it completely.

A useful middle ground

Some things are fine for friends — but not the whole room

Chat Buddy is social by design. As you get to know people, you may want friends to see more of your profile without opening the same information to everybody who happens to visit it.

Build friendships naturally

Add people you enjoy talking to and use friends-only privacy options for supported profile information when you want a smaller audience.

Friends are still your choice

Adding somebody as a friend is a social connection. It does not mean you need to share every detail about yourself with them.

Change your mind later

Privacy preferences can change. Review supported profile settings whenever you want and choose a different audience if something no longer feels right.

Two different kinds of control

Profile privacy is not the same as blocking someone

Privacy settings decide who can see supported information on your profile. Ignore, Block and Complete Block are separate Chat Buddy tools designed for situations where you want to reduce or stop interaction with another user.

Profile Privacy Controls the audience for supported information on your profile.
Ignore or Block Used when you want to reduce or stop unwanted interaction with another member.
Report Use reporting tools when behaviour involves harassment, scams, threats, spam or other rule-breaking.

An important distinction

Privacy controls apply to other members — not site administration

Profile privacy settings control what other Chat Buddy users can see. They do not prevent authorised Chat Buddy administrators from accessing profile information when necessary for moderation, account management, safety or the operation of the service.

Profile Privacy is not the same as hiding information from Chat Buddy itself.

Authorised administrators may still need access to account and profile information for moderation, support, safety, abuse prevention and account management.

Good privacy goes beyond a setting

Think before putting personal information into any chat profile

Privacy controls are useful, but the safest information is still information you never share unnecessarily in the first place.

Never share passwords or codes

Nobody you meet in Chat Buddy needs your password, authenticator code, recovery code or login details.

Avoid precise identifying details

Think carefully before sharing information that could reveal your exact home address, workplace, school or daily routine.

You can always share less

You do not owe another member personal information simply because you have been talking for a while or because they ask for it.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Chat Buddy profile privacy

Straightforward answers about who can see your profile and how the privacy controls work.

Can I make my whole Chat Buddy profile private?

Chat Buddy provides privacy choices for supported profile information. Rather than relying on one setting for everything, individual supported items can use options such as Everyone, Friends or No One.

What does Everyone mean?

Everyone means the supported profile information can be visible to other users who are able to view your Chat Buddy profile.

What does Friends mean?

Friends limits the supported information to people connected with you as friends on Chat Buddy.

What does No One mean?

No One hides the supported profile information from other Chat Buddy members.

Can different parts of my profile have different privacy settings?

Yes, where individual privacy controls are supported. For example, you may choose to make one item visible to Everyone while keeping another limited to Friends or set to No One.

Can I change a privacy setting later?

Yes. Supported profile privacy settings can be changed as your preferences change.

If I choose No One, can Chat Buddy administrators still see the information?

Yes. Profile privacy settings control visibility to other members. Authorised Chat Buddy administrators can still access necessary profile and account information for moderation, account management, safety and operation of the service.

Is Profile Privacy the same as blocking someone?

No. Profile Privacy controls who can see supported profile information. Blocking tools are designed to reduce or stop interaction with another user.

Does Friends mean I should share private information with those people?

No. A Chat Buddy friendship is still an online connection. You should continue to protect sensitive information such as passwords, security codes, banking details and precise identifying information.

Can privacy settings protect information I post in the public chat room?

Profile privacy settings apply to supported profile information. They do not turn messages posted in a public chat room into private content. Always think carefully about what you post publicly.

Build a profile without giving up control

Chat Buddy is about meeting people and being part of a community. Profile Privacy gives registered members more choice over what they share while still enjoying friends, galleries, gifts, games and live conversation.
